How to read a listing like a local

The postcard is in the photos. The trip is in the constraints. Read those twice.

Pretty pictures are not a plan. Locals read the boring lines: start time, capacity, kind, what you will do with your hands, what is not included.

Scan in this order

  1. Kind — someday, pop party, or event.
  2. When — weekday vs weekend, hour, duration.
  3. Where — city is not neighbourhood. Neighbourhood is not door.
  4. How many — if it is four, your squad of seven does not fit.
  5. Amount — if the number makes you bitter, skip.
  6. The work — fold, pick, taste, dance. If they did not say, ask in the why, briefly.

Red flags for travelers

Vague copy. No time. “Bring whoever.” A why that would fit any city. You can do better. There are hosts who write like they will be in the room.

Open experiences and practice on three cards before you apply to any. The third one is usually the real want.
